Volkswagen E-Bugster Concept

Yet another electric vehicle concept from Volkswagen that is unlikely to make it even close to production (see the E-up! and the Golf PHEV). We first caught a glimpse of the VW E Bugster concept before the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Three months later, it was back at the Beijing Motor Show.

The E-Bugster concept is an all electric vehicle with an adapted powertrain from the e-Golf hidden beneath it’s shiny white skin. Like the 5 door e-Golf, the E-bugster features an 85 kW electric motor rated at 144 horsepower and 199 pound feet of torque. The electric motor drives the front wheels through a single speed transmission. Energy for the motor is provided by a 695 lb lithium ion battery with a capacity of 28.3 kWh – higher than the 26.5 kWh battery pack in the VW e-Golf.

Volkswagen boasts about the central electric module that only weighs 176 pounds which helps to keep the overall vehicle weight down. While no specific numbers were provided, the e-Bugster Concept came in lighter than the e-Golf. The e-Bugster can race to 60mph in just over 10 seconds and provides a range of at least 110 miles in the city. Via level 3 DC fast chargers, the Volkwsagen e-Bugster should be able to recharge within 35 minutes.

There was no production date or estimates given, and Volkswagen avoided questions about it. We highly doubt the e-Bugster will ever make it to production.
