Volvo teased the model updates on its V60 plug-in hybrid electric for weeks leading up to the Geneva auto show when it would debut its revamped version. Prior to the unveiling, Volvo CEO Patrik Widerstrand said “This second-generation hybrid is the perfect choice for the uncompromising buyer who wants a car with low carbon dioxide emissions packed with driving pleasure.”

The Volvo V60 PHEV uses a 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine that can produce 215 horsepower. The 70 hp electric motor and the diesel engine can get the V60 PHEV to 62 mph in just over 6 seconds. With an 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, electric only range is 31 miles.

Changes made to the V60 PHEV are the same changes made to the whole V60 lineup. According to Widerstrand, “We’ve made the car look more purposeful and dynamic, reflecting its personality. And your every interaction with your car is more intuitive, expressive and customizable.”

Volvo says the V60 plug-in hybrid diesel is a huge success with the “initial run of 1000 cars sold out before the car reached the showrooms.”

Volvo will now start offering the V60 PHEV in a full range of specifications and colors rather than only a single “Pure Limited” version. Volvo also announced that production will increase from 1000 units last year to 4000 units this year.
