Car2Go Electric Car Sharing Program in San Diego

Back in November of 2011, Car2Go launched it’s car sharing operation in San Diego. When the program started, there were 500 rentals happening each week. Now there are over 3500 rentals taking place each week.

Car2Go’s fleet has 300 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive models in use. There are over 6,000 users that have signed up to be part of the program, and it’s only 100 days old!

Car2Go says the average trip in one of the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive’s is between 15 and 30 minutes, and the average distance driven is between 5 and 10 miles.

The program couldn’t have come at a better time – in the past 100 days, gas prices have risen almost 20% in some areas. Car2Go’s electric vehicle sharing program is a great way for San Diego residents to save some money on gas without the cost of owning an electric vehicle. Members pay only for the time the car is used, and there is no parking, insurance, re-charging or maintenance fees.

As of March 11, Car2Go started charging a membership fee of $35.
