Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid

There has been much speculation about the Mitsubishi PX-Miev and what it would bring us, and now we know. At the Geneva Auto Show, Mitsubishi has confirmed that a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will be available later this year.

The Mitsubishi Outlander P-HEV will use some of the technology in the existing Mitsubishi iMiev, as well as some from the previous PX-Miev concept vehicles.

The Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid will allow the driver to select between all electric and hybrid mode so that the driver can choose where to drive in pure electric mode.

The Outlander P-HEV uses 2 electric motors, one to drive the front axle and one to drive the rear axle and will have all wheel drive. There will be 2 hybrid modes – series mode will operate the electric motors with electric power from the battery pack and from the gasoline engine, and parallel mode which will use the electric motor and gasoline motor to power the Outlander P-HEV for maximum power.

Mitsubishi estimates that the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid will have an all electric range of 30 miles. The Outlander has the ability to recharge the battery pack while driving under the gasoline engine’s power, so after a long drive you would be able to do another 30 miles on all electric power.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid will be available before the end of Mitsubishi’s fiscal year 2012, which probably means sometime before March 2013.
