Bosch Automotive Service Solutions is now offering a wireless battery charging system for owners of the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt electric vehicles. The cost is about $3000 plus installation. That fee covers the 240 volt Level 2 charging station, an adapter for the vehicle, and a floor mounted charging pad.

The wall unit connects to a 30-amp 240 volt power supply. It is designed to be mounted on a garage wall directly in front of the parking space, and displays charging status information and also helps the driver park in the correct location over the charging pad.

The vehicle adapter contains the receiving coil for the wireless charging system. The parking pad contains the transmitting coil that sends electricity to the vehicle, and is connect to the wall unit via a cable (Bosch notes that some location’s electric code specifies that cable needs to be trenched into the ground).

The 3.3 kilowatt system (meaning that 2013 Nissan Leafs can’t charge at the full 6.6kW rate) is called Plugless Power and is made by Evatran Group. The units have been in testing in a limited trial program for 2 years since the system was first unveiled in 2010.

Plugless Power says it’s working on systems for other electric vehicles, and owners of other vehicles can register for priority ordering when those systems become available.
