2013 BMW i3 Spy Photo Side View

Autocar UK posted some spy photos of the BMW i3 while it was testing in some hot weather in Southern Europe. Some of the pictures show jumper cables as if they are trying to recharge or jump start the 12v battery. The vehicle has the usual camouflage including a random blue pattern on the exterior and black cloth over the dash components. While the i3 was stopped the crew was quick to cover most of it with a tarp.

Some interesting comments followed in the post as well as in some blogs that picked up the article – some of them incorrect, as I think the pictures prove.

  1. The BMW i3 has a frunk storage space up front under the hood. While the photos do show some sort of box, it also shows the jumper cable positive lead headed into that box – I don’t think BMW would recommend storing groceries next to the 12v battery
  2. The BMW i3 now has a b pillar inbetween the front and rear door – no, that looks like a bulky part of the door and associated seals. Looks the same as the 3rd door setup on many pickups. Since there is no b-pillar, that door needs to have structural members to support the roof in a rollover.
  3. A high floor -yes, the BMW i3 is built on a platform of batteries which does make the floor of the electric vehicle higher than others, but the driver in the photo has his foot up on the sill which is inches higher than the actual floor of the car.

2013 BMW i3 Spy Photo Under Hood

This version of the BMW i3 has been the same through several months and several sets of spy photos, so chances are this will be the production shape of the vehicle.
