Originally expected to debut at the Frantfurt Motor Show in September of 2013, BMW has announced that their range extended BMW i3 will make its official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March 2013.

At the Detroit Auto Show BMW displayed the i3 Coupe Concept and BMW’s head of R&D Herbert Diess said “I imagine many buyers will order the range extender to cure their range anxiety, discovering later they need it very seldom. For those who plan a daily use of the range extender, the i3 is probably not the right choice and a plug-in hybrid model is a more suitable solution.

Perhaps with further research into this topic, BMW has decided that more people are currently interested in a range extended plug-in vehicle than a full electric vehicle.

Along with the announcement of the BMW i3 REx debut, BMW has also released some specs on the electric vehicle.

The electric motor is rated at 125 kW (around 170hp) giving the electric vehicle a 0-60 mph time of less than 8 seconds. With the range extender, the i3 increases its overall range from 90 miles of electric range, to 186 miles of gasoline and electric miles of range combined.

The Geneva Motor Show runs from March 7th to March 17th.
