BMW ActiveE recall over bad drivetrain housing

BMW is recalling certain 1-series ActiveE vehicles built between August 17, 2011 and December 19, 2011.

Insufficient sealing between the transmission and electric motor could cause premature wearing which could leave to failure and loss of propulsion. Over time, the connecting can wear because of a lack of grease lubrication on the gear shaft that transfers power from the electric motor to the transmission.

Sudden loss of vehicle propulsion could increase the risk of crash in the vehicle (think starting to cross a busy road and you lose power part way across).

BMW will notify the owners via telephone and let them know to take their vehicle to a dealership to have the drivetrain connection system inspected and updated. Any worn electric motor gearing will be replaced.

The recall will begin in January 2013.

Owners are asked to call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].
