BMW 328e plug-in hybrid to start production in November 2015

This year, the BMW 3 series is getting a facelift. More exciting is that BMW is introducing the 3-series plug-in hybrid. For the North American market, BMW will offer the 328e plug-in hybrid model in late 2015.

The 3-series plug-in hybrid sedan uses a 4 cylinder gasoline engine, and an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Total system power is 245 hp with 295 lb-ft of torque.

All-electric range from the actively-cooled, 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is around 22 miles, says BMW. Top electric speed is 75 mph. COmbined fuel consumption is rated at 2.1 liters per 100 kms (which translates to 112 MPGe).

Since the 328e has a smaller battery pack, it has a lower electric range than the Audi A3 e-Tron, but it could also make it cheaper.

Production of the BMW 328e is scheduled for November, 2015, and first units are expected to arrive at dealerships in early 2016.
