VW moving forward with production XL1

At the Paris Auto Show, Volkswagen announced that the VW XL1 concept will become a production vehicle sometime next year. The Volkswagen XL1 is a deisel hybrid electric vehicle that VW claims can achieve between 261 mpg (on the US test cycle) and 313 mpg (on the European test cycle). This is the first vehicle that we would classify as not sacrificing any efficiency for performance.

With only a 27 hp electric motor and a 48 horsepower 2 cylinder diesel, the XL1 is definitely all about efficiency! The Volkswagen XL1 has a 0-62mph time of almost 12 seconds.

Volkswagen says the production version of the XL1 will go on sale in limited numbers sometime next year. It probably won’t be cheap – or popular. If it is popular, the XL1 could definitely be the first in a line of ultra efficient compact cars.
