Volkswagen Passat GTE from the Paris Motor Show

First introduced in September, the Passat GTE made its official unveiling at the 2014 Paris Motor Show earlier this month. The Passat follows the naming conventions of the Golf GTE – which is also a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

The hybrid powerplant uses a 1.4 liter turbo gasoline engine and an electric motor for total system power of 215 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque.

0-62 mph time is under 8 seconds, and a top speed in excess of 136 mph. The larger powertrain puts performance right in line with the Golf GTE, even though the Passat GTE is larger and heavier.

Like the Golf GTE, there is little chance the Passat GTE will make it to North America. There are actually rumors that the Passat in any variant will not be available in 2015, making way for the CrossBlue PHEV CUV to move into the market.

The Passat GTE is set to launch in Europe in the second half of next year in both sedan and wagon versions.
