Kia Motors Corporation has announced that it plans to sell 5000 Soul electric vehicles each year worldwide. Kia expects the US to be the largest market for the automaker’s first electric vehicle.

The Kia Soul EV uses a 27 kWh lithium ion battery to power the 81 kilowatt electric motor, and powers the vehicle from 0-62 mph in 11.2 seconds.

Because of the battery pack, the Soul EV weighs 330 pounds more than the gasoline version, but Kia still says the lithium-polymer battery pack gets extra range when compared to other EV batteries on the market because of the 30% higher energy density. The estimated range for the US is 92 miles, and the EPA will confirm that range before it goes on sale in the country.

The Kia Soul EV first went on sale in South Korea on April 14th, and will arrive in North American showrooms sometime in the second half of 2014. Initially, Kia will sell the Soul Electric Vehicle only in Oregon, California, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. Kia says they will expand the Soul EV availability to nationwide some time in 2015.

Kia hasn’t announced U.S. pricing. In South Korea, the Soul EV stickers for 42.5 million won, or about $41,300 at current exchange rates. But incentives of as much as $22,350 cut the cost by more than half. The battery accounts for 40 percent of the Soul EV’s total cost.

  1. Any inside info on the (90-100kw?) Quick Charge or rollout of chargers to dealers and other locations?

    Thank you!
