BMW i8 Roadster to launch in 2018

Tue May 10, 2016 10:34 pm

BMW has announced they will launch the i8 roadster in 2018.
I can't wait to see one of these in person, and hopefully by 2018 I'll be in a position to purchase one! I almost pulled the trigger on an i8 last fall but we ended up selling and moving and that changed priorities for a while.

Harald Kruger(chairman of the Board of Management at BMW) said the i8 Roadster has been approved for production and will join the current i8 at the top of the brand. In the second half of 2016 the i3 will come with a 50% larger battery capacity, and then in 2018 the i8 Roadster.

As the EV technology increases the pace, the BMW i8 is rumoured to boost power output from it's current 350 hp to 750 hp.

Automobile reports say that the next-generation i8 will ditch the current i8’s three-cylinder, range-extending internal combustion engine for an all-electric with three high-revving (25,000rpm) electric motors producing a total of 750 hp and stronger batteries capable of delivering a 500 kilometre range. It will include four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, torque vectoring, and an active suspension system that scans the road ahead.

Back in 2012 Mercedes demonstrated the full potential of all-wheel-drive torque vectoring with their 740 hp Mercedes SLS E-Cell. The next gen i8 launches around 2022-2023. Having a full decade since the release of the SLS E-Cell, we can assume and hope BMW's next generation EV sports car will meet if not exceed the past .
