Electric Fiat 500E aimed for production in 2013

The Fiat 500e is spotted again on the roads in near-production ready form. Even though Fiat has not officially released details about the electric hatchback, it seems pretty much guaranteed that the Fiat 500e (formerly called the Fiat 500 BEV) will launch in 2013.

Spy photos of the small EV started to emerge in late 2011, with a few more shots captured this week. The photographer spotted the letters 500E on the dashboard inside.

The Fiat 500E features a Chrysler developed electric powertrain and a lithium-ion battery pack. The electric motor delivers 100hp to the front wheels. Full specs have not been released by Fiat.

The Fiat 500e electric vehicle looks very much like the gasoline powered Fiat 500, but it will likely get its own front and rear fascias as well as some unique electric vehicle only enhancements.

When the Fiat 500E launches in limited production in 2013, it will compete directly with the Mitsubishi i, the Nissan Leaf, and the Ford Focus Electric. To gain any market share, the Fiat 500e will likely be priced below most of the other electric vehicles currently on the market.
