Confirmed: Volkswagen Golf Electric to launch in late 2013

Confusing names and slightly different models aside, Volkswagen has confirmed they will be launching the all electric VW Golf in late 2013. Originally, prior to launching the Golf EV tests in California, Volkswagen had planned on launching the Golf EV in 2014. Things must be going well, because VW of America president Jonathan Browning confirmed that Volokswagen has moved up the U.S. release date to late 2013. Late 2013 is also when the VW Golf EV will go on sale in Europe.

Although VW is behind other manufacturers in the race to electric vehicles, they seem a bit more reserved. The automaker expects only 3 percent of it’s vehicles will be electric or hybrid in 2018 – other manufacturers have estimated up to 10%.

Volkswagen is currently testing 20 Golf electric vehicle hatchbacks in the San Francisco Bay Area – those vehicles are being called the Golf Blue-e-motion. Just weeks ago, VW confirmed production of the Golf plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2015. It could make for a crowded Golf lineup, but it’s been working for the Prius so far.
