Chevrolet Volt price to drop up to $10,000 for next generation

As a speaker at Fortune’s Brainstorm Green Conference in Laguna Niguel, California, GM’s CEO Dan Akerson had some announcements to make about the Chevy Volt.

“…in this next generation we think we can decrease the price on the order of $7,000 to $10,000, without decontenting.”

The Volt is currently priced at $39,145, so if GM cut the price by $7000 to $10000, that would put the price in the same range as the current Nissan Leaf model. When is the next generation of the Chevy Volt? The new Chevy Cruze platform is going into service next year for the 2015 model year, so many thing the next generation volt will be a 2016 model year.

GM has sold over 35,000 Volts in the US so far, and there have been over 150,000 collective electric miles driven on them so far.

  1. Won’t this announcement just kill sales of the current Volt?

    • Possibly – but there’s no date given for the next generation Volt, so maybe people will think it’s too long to wait…
